4. You will likely never be able to ethically take a 700yd shot at an animal with a .30-06 or a .308 in the near future. The wind drift with “only” a 10MPH wind is over 35 inches. Being able to put all of your rounds in a 9″ circle is good enough accuracy to ethically kill most any medium sized game or larger. A 9″ circle at 700 yards is the equivalent to putting all of your shots in a circle just a little larger than 1 1/4″ at 100 yards. There is no bench rest in the mountains so you need to be able to shoot from practical shooting positions. You need to accurately guage distance (laser range finder) and you need to judge the wind speed and direction. These are not skills you learn overnight. Out to 300 yds the animal will not know whether it was hit with a .308 or a .30-06 as both are effective at that range against Elk and smaller sized game with premium ammo. If you are looking at Elk sized game, 700yds is beyond the ideal range for both the .30-06 and .308 as the velocity has dropped off below where they will reliably expand and penetrate to the vitals. You can currently get surplus .30-06 for about $.50 a round plus shipping. This is running low and will soon run out. .308 FMJ can be found for about $.40 a round and should be available for quite a while at between $.40 and $.50 a round barring another consumer created shortage because of hoarding.
