What is the significance of saccharine in ‘1984’ by George Orwell?

I’ve noticed that saccharine is mentioned in this book a lot, and how the party members have one tablet with their meals and consume it quite frequently. I was wondering why it is in the novel – I believe it may just be a sweetener, is it that sugar is very rare so sweeteners are used instead?

  1. Yes – there is a part where Julia brings him real coffee and jam. There are many food shortages in the book, including chocolate, sugar etc. Saccarine is an artificial sweetener.

  2. Saccharine Definition

  3. I don’t know the answer to your question, but in the 1980s sugar was considered to be bad for you and so an artificial sweetener was used. Maybe it is a dig a food substitutes that were to become so common.
