Weird Al Could Have Had Two Songs On This List
Our local rock station recently paid homage to four-letter words, only the ones they chose would not cause any trouble at all with the Federal Communications Commissions. The disc jockey at Cincinnati’s “home the finest classic rock” instead played a set of songs with a single four letter word as the title.
“Jump” by Van Halen was among the choices, along with “Lola” by the Kinks. The list was highlighted by the last hit played, the title track from The Beatles film HELP.
The segment could have gone on for hours, for myriads of such tunes are packed into rock and roll history. What could have been more challenging, and perhaps the theme of a future set, is to play a segment of songs with titles consisting of just three letter word.
Here are fifteen of the most popular, including two by the same artist from the same album.
1. Peg by Steely Dan
The highest-charting single from Aja tells the story of an actress, who can “see it all in 3-D, it’s your favorite foreign movie.”
2. Aja by Steely Dan
The title track from the hugely popular album, subsequently prompted many new parents to assign that name to their newborn daughters.
3. Rio by Duran Duran
Exotic scenes in the frequently viewed video helped this title track to each gold status, even though it does not hold the staying power of fellow single “Hungry Like the Wolf.”
4. Why by Ace
Paul Carrack and his first band ask two questions on their Five A Side album, but the more popular one was “How Long.”
5. How by John Lennon
Like the title track this tune from Imagine is piano-based, only it carries a less peaceful tone.
6. Ask by the Smiths
“Shyness is nice, and shyness can stop you from doing all the things in life you’d like to,” Morrissey states to open this track from Louder Than Bombs.
7. Red by Catfish and the Bottlemen
Every song on Ride has a one-word title, the shortest of which is named after the first color in the spectrum.
8. Bad by Michael Jackson
Weird Al’s parody of this hit, which he called “Fat,” could be here as well, so I will give him an entry later down the list.
9. You by the Who
Bassist John Entwistle composed this Who Are You track, which rests comfortably around gems like “Daily Records” and “Don’t Let Go the Coat.”
10. Bob by Weird Al Yankovic
The accordion-playing comic loads up on palindromes here, the best of which are “Go hang a salami, I’m a lasagna hog” and “May a moody baby doom a yam.”
11. Jet by Paul McCartney and Wings
Many interpretations of this pre-Band on the Run single exist, although no one is certain of why there are so many military allusions.
12. And by Ambrosia
This thirty second opener merely serves as an introduction to the title track of the band’s best album, Somewhere I’ve Never Traveled.
13. Cry by Godley and Creme
Years after leaving 10cc, this artistic duo used an intriguing video to garner interest for its only hit.
14. She by the Monkees
Rock quartet Kiss has a cut with the exact same name, but it is hard to resist the sweet tenor of Mickey Dolenz.
15. Him by Rupert Holmes
Piña coladas served as a bigger hit for Holmes, which he followed up with this single about a jealous lover.
