How to decipher tax codes on Ontario Wal-Mart store receipts?

HI there, I have googled this and can’t seem to figure this out, so I am requesting the help of all you smart yahoo answerers.

As I review different store receipts, there are different codes to the right, which I assume are tax codes.

For example, the Wal-Mart has ‘J’ ‘C’ ‘E’ ‘D’ and ‘A’

Here we have GST of 5% and PST of 8%

I know some items are exempt, but the ‘E’ code doesn’t match up.

If anyone can help me out, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I do realize that things like women’s shoes under $30 have only one tax, and that groceries are exempt from all tax, but I still don’t see the pattern… with the exception of ‘D’ for groceries…and I think that maybe ‘J’ is only GST….. ‘E’ items seem like they have both taxes, but I can’t tell consistently. There is a chance that ‘C’ means clearance, but it doesn’t indicate a tax code… I even tried calling the store and they claimed to have no idea…..

  1. Have you considered the case where only one of the taxes are applied? While GST and PST have very similar criteria, there are some items where only one or the other would be applied. For example, diapers should have only GST and not PST applied.

  2. Tax Code J

  3. J = 13% HST

    A = 13% HST (sale item)

    Y = 5% GST

    D = 0%

    H = 0% (sale item)

  4. Bump.

    I think that “J” = HST, but I don’t know about “A”, “D”, and “H”.
