# How does 10 divided by 0.5 = 20?

I really have no clue how to do this, I’m OK with maths, but this, just dazzles me.. I’d expect 10 / 0.5 to mean half of ten or at least a number thats below 10.. But its 20? How does this work, can anyone explain please.

1. if division by half is division by 2, division by 1 gets you the whole number, so dividing by anything less than 1 will cause you number to go up, so by dividing 10 by half of 1 you have basically multiplied it by half

2. 100 Divided By 10

3. Half of ten would be .5 MULTIPLIED by ten.

It may help to think of it as a fraction:

10/(1/2)

you flip the divisor 1/2 so it becomes 2

10 x 2 = 20

Or, within the number 1, there are two .5s. So with each unit, counting up to ten, you have two units of .5. You can do this manually like .5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10.

Or, if you divide with a bar like .5|10 (hard to show on the keyboard).

then move the decimal to the right so .5 becomes 5 and 10 becomes 100

5|100 = 20

This was kind of difficult to explain. I hope it makes sense.

4. Because that’s like saying 10 divided by 1/2 is 20. Because 10 times .5 is 5 cause 10 times 1/2 is 5. 10 divided by .5 or 1/2 is 20 because .5 goes into 20 10 times.

5. 10 / 2 is half of 10

10 divided by something greater than 1 is less than 10

10 divided by something less than 1 should be more than 10.

10 / (1/2)

. . . multiply numerator and denominator by 2

(2 * 10) / (2 * 1/2)

. . . 2 * 10 = 20 ….. 2 * 1/2 = 1

20 / 1 = 20

**********

Note that

10 / (1/2) … is NOT the same as (10/1) / 2

(10 / 1) / 2 = 10 / 2 = 5

6. 10/0.5= 10 /(1/2)=10 * 2=20

7. If you are already taking advanced classes, get yourself a good calculator so you could do such simple things as 21/20 amd 11/10. In fact, you won’t need a calculator to manually figure out the above.

you need to think more along the lines of how many halves are in 10

9. You’re looking at division in the wrong light. Division is repeated subtraction. When you ask what is 10/.5 you are really asking How many times can I take .5 away from 10

10-.5=9.5___1

9.5-.5=9____2

9-.5=8.5____3

8.5-.5=8____4

8-.5=7.5____5

7.5-.5=7____6

7-.5=6.5____7

6.5-.5=6____8

6-.5=5.5____9

5.5-.5=5____10

5-.5=4.5____11

4.5-.5=4____12

4-.5=3.5____13

3.5-.5=3____14

3-.5=2.5____15

2.5-.5=2____16

2-.5=1.5____17

1.5-.5=1____18

1-.5=.5_____19

.5-.5=0_____20 and you are done.

10. hope this helps..10apples give to 1/2 a person..cannot cause there is no such thing 1/2 person..so make 1/2 person into 1person(x2) and 10apples

into 20apples(x2).
