does anyone know how to make a santa hat for a horse using a people santa hat?

i know you can buy them, but they’re kind of expensive when you factor in shipping, plus the santa hats at stores around here are like $5. i was thinking of buying a big fluffy one, then cutting 2 slits in the white part to slide the halter through so part of the hat sits behind the ears, then cutting 2 holes for ears. do you think this would work? have any of you tried it? it seems like it would work, but my visions have been wrong before haha.

all advice/comments/experiences welcome! thank you!

  1. If used Santa hats on my horses for over 15 yrs, not big thing as long as it is connected correctly and doesn’t slip down. In fact, you can attach it to the bridle and leave it there all season, it will stay on the bridle.

Best thing is if your horse will let you put your halter/bridle on him and let you do it from there, but if not, you can just lay the bridle out flat on the ground and make your slits where they belong…then I use small plastic zip strips to keep them in place, then trim off the zip strips. Make sure, after you put the bridle back on your horse and make your adjustments, make sure that you find a place that you want to keep the little white fluffy ball at the tip of the hat and secure it with another zip strip. This will keep your hat from flipping around and bothering/scaring your horse. In all these years, I haven’t found a horse that would not tolerate a Santa hat if put on properly…Enjoy the holidays.

  4. As long as your horse doesn’t flip out when he sees the had, and if he lets you put it on, go for it. Two years ago I got a pony for Christmas, and my parents and trainer put a gigantic bow on her. I’m sure a santa hat can’t be that much worse. I wouldn’t think that you’d need slits for the ears – it might look a little weird. Go for it!

  5. Yep, people have done this before at a local Christmas Parade. I also went to Petsmart when they were closing out their horse section and got antlers for my horse! :)) They are so cute lol My friend just put the santa hat on her horse for the parade one time.

    hope this helps!

  6. I think that would work, however you have to make sure that your horse is okay with it first, because after the halter is slipped through it, if he freaks out he is not going to be able to shake it off!!

But yeah, thats how I woud make it.

Or you could just buy this: http://www.horse.com/Holiday-Horse-Santa-Hat-GBR55…
